The $1000 iPhone bill…

Recently, I took a trip to Canada to visit some friends for 10 days. I’d just received my iPhone for Christmas which was great, this seemed like the perfect device to take with me to do some internet browsing and check emails on the fly.

Needless to say, I had a great trip. The iPhone got a little bit of use whilst I was there and whilst I had ‘data roaming’ turned off to avoid the charges, I thought everything was fine. Now, it was my understanding that “When abroad, turning off Data Roaming may avoid roaming charges when using email, web browsing and other data services.” and that’s exactly what I did. I turned off Data Roaming, expecting everything to be fine.

 roaming charges are a bitch

Today, I got my online bill. My jaw dropped when I saw this as it turns out I have in fact been charged for EVERY kilobyte downloaded inside the 10 days I was there. Now like I mentioned earlier, it was my understanding that I wouldn’t be charged for this. There has been an obvious miscommunication here but what I’m more concerned about, is why o2 didn’t contact me to let me know that my bill was getting a little out of hand. I would have thought that when your bill exceeds £100 it might just be a good idea to warn the customer… For example, my phone could have been stolen and taken to Canada and used on a large scale over there, who knows.

However, the bottom line is, there has been a huge miscommunication here and my only hope is to appeal to o2 and hope they can help me out a little.
